Schoolgirl Lessons

I received this pattern in the mail the other day and just knew I had to stitch it right away. It is from LHN recommending Rose of Sharon by CC Belle Soie . I've used these silks in other colors before and just loved them and not had a problem. It's hard to tell in the picture but the red has turned this white fabric pinkish. Should I have rinsed the thread first ? I used Jubilee fabric, does it not go well with dyed floss ? One thing I am definitely not going to do is wash it, that would be a disaster !! I was going to stitch the bottom of this for the back, finishing it as a pillow. I am still going to finish it as a pillow, but will find some fabric for the back, in the meantime it will go with the rest of my "finishes" waiting to be finished. I really have to set aside a day and do some, my drawer is getting full.

It looks wonderful, I'll enjoy seeing it when you get the finishing on it done. Can't help on the color staining the fabric. If it didn't get damp I wouldn't have thought it should have left a mark on your fabric. I haven't used any of the CC silks yet, so don't know how other colors may behave. If I use that one I'll keep an eye on it.

I had a similar problem with Belle Soie Rose of Sharon while stitching with it on Lakeside Linens Vintage Bittersweet. I used a waste knot several times, and I noticed that the linen threads around it were always tinted pink/red after I removed the knot and anchored the silk. This is not so much of a problem on Bittersweet (a very pale, dusty pink), but I can imagine it would be very aggravating on a pure white ground.

I'm always very careful not to get my stitching wet or damp, so my guess is that it's just something about this fiber/dye combination. Too bad, because it's a beautiful silk! Still, I would certainly use Belle Soie in the future. I would just be inclined to use a little extra caution with Rose of Sharon.

Oh well! I'm just glad to know that I wasn't the only one to experience this.

Your LHN is lovely, I have this pattern as well and may think twice about using the Belle Soie. Some overdyeds you are advised to rinse in cold water first then dry, I am sure you could do the same with silk. It is still lovely and I would finish it and enjoy!

I've never stitched with such a vibrant Belle Soie, so I can't help you...but I can tell you that I know I wouldn't bother with rinsing my threads...as when I start stitching....I want to stitch! LOL! It's a beautiful finish Irene...are you going to do the tassels like Mary Kathryn did on hers?

Yikes, I've yet to receive mine... Maybe you should drop a line to CC? Maybe they're not aware of the problem, especially since you already had another person's comment about a similar experience. I know lots of companies like to know about such things instead of getting late critics about their products :) I'm not sure now if I'll use the skein I'll receive - hmmm... maybe the best will be to try and see how much the coloration is visible on the fabric. Great WIP, Irene!!
